THE EARLY SCOOP ON THE HOT PASSAT

Volkswagen plans to debut the new Passat R36 variant at either the Essen Motor Show in December or Geneva Auto Show next year, but photos of the car have already spilled onto the Web. Early specs indicate that a 3.6-liter V6 will put down 296 horsepower through VW’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system. Equipped with a DSG gearbox, the R36 will reportedly tick off 0-60 in 5.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 155mph. It’s uncertain whether VW will offer the R36 in the United States.

Compared to its Jetta and Golf siblings, the Passat isn’t a typical tuner car, although it still ranks among the SKUs of many European performance manufacturers.

“It’s a different type of client,” said Neuspeed president Gary Neumann of Passat owners. Neuspeed offers suspension, induction and engine management products for the Passat, of which Neumann says suspension components are most likely to carry over to the R36.

But he’s not holding his breath for the car’s arrival in the United States. “We definitely aren’t going to see it for awhile, if at all. We’re still waiting on the R32.”
