I've got my eyes on several VWs...  I'm very interested in a local GTI on a lot here in town.  They have asking price at 18,000.  It's an 04 39,000miles 5sp dark metalic gray with 18inch black with polished lip.  I've got the talk down to 15,000

I've also found a VR6 that has 40,000miles 5 spd 01 factory everything for 12,995...

What of these two cars have an overall best rating.  From reliability to performance to upgrades.....

what is the HP rating of GTI and VR6.  What motor is more versitile?   thanks

I agree with Oduong. I myself am a big fan of boost although I love my R32. But I would go for something a little less common. Have you looked into the Jetta GLI? It looks the same as a regular Jetta but with 18" BBS rims, factory body kit, and a 1.8T 6speed. The handling on the car is amazing and are rare enough to hold their value very well. Good luck on making a decision, hope I didnt confuse you even more.

I would go with the vr6 because all in all no matter how far you want to go with the performance upgrades it will end up with more HP than the 1.8T.

While the VR6 WILL end up with more ponies, it is usually much more expensive to upgrade than the 1.8T.  There are so many great choices when modding a 1.8T, but check out www.EIPtuning.com and see for yourself what kind of parts are available for either engine. It all comes down to personal prefference in the end. I believe that the VR6 has about 180BHP stock while the 1.8T has around 150BHP.

I have a 2000 VW New Beetle with 82000 miles and the timing belt broke.  I am wondering if anyone knows for sure if the bug has the interference motor or not.  I have been told several things bout the timing belt, ranging from, replace and keep going and 5400 to replace the engine.  Need some advice. Thanks

I've got an 04' VR6 GTI and the difference between the VR6 in the GTI and in the Jetta is huge. The Gti with that motor drives like it has power. I would go with the VR6 if you are planning on either keeping it for a good while or heavily modding it. If you are keeping it for a significant amount of time, a naturally aspirated car will most likely be cheaper than a car with as much extra piping and hose as a turbo car has. If you are looking for something sick as far as modding goes, get the VR6 and put in a supercharger. Those make some fast cars.

Going with a normally aspirated set up is always much more expensive than forced induction.  Piping is a fraction of the cost involved with a proper NA setup such as headers, valve cut jobs, porting and piston work.

My suggestion is to go with the GTI and as I have recently found out make sure you get a 2001 or later so you get the 180hp 1.8T instead of the 150hp one.  There is a an abundance of 1.8T parts available.

Ultimately you need to know what your goals are.  You need to have realistic goals before you get started. Obviously in the long run the VR6 has more potential but the money you will put in will be huge.  T3/T4 turbo, exhaust manifold, larger fuel injectors and fuel pump etc.

I have been down this road before.  Just something to think about.

I have a 2001 Jetta VR6, so I am partial to the VR. I will disagree, with those that same it cost more money to upgrade a VR as opposed a 1.8T. You can T a vr for around $3000 from Kinetic Motor Sports (estimated 230-240 whp for stage 1).   Whatever you decide god luck!

I disagree, maybe off the line the lighter 1.8T has the edge, but in the open road VR6 is my call. Plus I have personnally kept a 1.8T in my rear view mirror, he tried to pass me but could not mustard enough power. My wife can testify to this too.
