1981 rabbit pickup truck! were do i start

here goes another project, i just bought a 1981 rabbbit truck with the 1.6 diesel and four speed trans, the truck is in excelent shape besides the motor,it has a blown head gasket and warped head,should i just fix the problem ,or put the turbo 1.6 in with a five speed, which would be better any ideas or helpful websites, for parts and info ,thanks nick the fix
