I recently bought a 2000 VW Jetta 2.0L 4 cyl. I was just wondering if anyone knew what I could do to make it faster than it is. From what I know and what the engine looks like it is bone stock and bone slow . So, if anyone can help me with suggestions please let me know. Thanks.

WARNING: Once the mod bug bites, you are infected forever! There is no known cure that does not involve twisted metal, bodily harm, or rapidly depleting funds!
Seriously, though, you need to ask yourself what your end goal is, because once you start modding your car, it WILL snowball on you. Do you want to go fast in a straight line, do weekend canyon cruising, autocross or make a killer "sleeper" car? Is your engine turbocharged, naturally aspirated or diesel? Four cylinder engines came in all three flavors in '00.
Some basic mods you can do regardless of fueling and induction are pretty easy and some of the cheaper items to add. For starters, and particularly on gassers, a cold air intake is a good mod, and when paired with a cat-back exhaust is pretty effective for adding a little horsepower and torque. A chip tune also helps a lot and probably the combination of these three will add the best bang for the buck for most casual drivers with stock brakes. And if you're looking for a lowered stance, a quality shock-spring or coilover package will accomplish that.
But when the mod bug syndrome kicks in, injectors, turbo upgrades, limited slip differentials and porting and polishing the heads, intake & exhaust manifolds start building some BIG power. Some of the Bizarro projects are pumping out over 400 hp from a 4-cyl!
With all that go, you gotta have lotsa whoa. Bigger brakes are a must! Additionally, it's good to add some gauges for engine monitoring. Of particular interest are a boost gauge for turbos, and Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) gauge for diesels, and oil pressure and water temperature and voltmeters are some other basics to add.
I hope I've helped a little, and good luck with your Mod Bug Syndrome

The best horsepower through a cold air inatake gaining 8hp, heard the evo intake is the best sos far, also catback exhaust, racing cluth, cranshaft maybe gaining 5 hp and giac chip 10hp all this are the cheapest with more hp gain except the racing cluth which for my vw jetta vr6 cost was $900 but i can burn tire on second any time i want now and sometimes a little on third.
