I bought the bug with a broken timing belt. I replaced the belt and I am sure that I got it back in time. How do I first make sure that it is in time, second the battery had been dead on this car for almost a year. I replaced the battery and it still would not start. Will the battery have been dead long enough to mess up the ECM.

What year is it, first off?

If you are sure you had the engine w/top dead center on cylinder #1, and had the cam & crank locked in place before you put the timing belt on, then your next step would be to fire it up and hook it up to a VCDS and check the timing.

But, with a non-starting car, that could be an issue . You mentioned that it wouldn't start, but didn't say if the engine was turning over. Automotive ECMs use technology that permanently records the engine parameters in its memory unless it is flashed, so a dead battery _shouldn't_ mess with it. Otherwise, how would the car start and run if you replaced a dead battery?

Really, though, we need a bit more information from you. How long did the car set, year, engine turning over or not, do you hear any clicking of relays when you turn the key, etc.
